MATH fourth and fifth grade

Please be sure your child knows his or her addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. This is crucial for your child in order to experience success in math.

Each fourth grader is responsible for creating his or her vocabulary file folder. Please provide your child with index cards and tape needed to complete this through out the year.

Parents, PLEASE practice and review skills at home.

Fourth grade has a newer math book.  The book is available on disk to use at home for $55. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, please let me know.

Unit 8- Students gain proficiency using the division to divide up to 4-digit dividends by 2-digit divisors.

Chapter 15-Divid multiples of 10 by 2-digit numbers, divide a multidigit number by 2-digit numbers, estimate quotients, and use skills and strategies to solve problems.

Chapter 16- Adjust the quotient, evaluate expressions and use the proper order of operations, divide by 2-digit numbers, and use skills and strategies to solve problems.

Unit 9-Students gain proficiency with measuring, comparing, and converting customary and metric measurements of length, capacity, and weight/mass, as well as with comparing temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius.

Chapter 17-Estimate and measure with nonstandard units, explore customary length to ¼ inch, estimate and measure customary capacity and weight, convert customary units, use skills and strategies to solve problems.

Chapter 18- Estimate and measure metric length, estimate and measure metric capacity and mass, convert metric units, estimate and measure temperature, and use skills and strategies  to solve problems.

Unit 10- Students gain proficiency with geometric concepts. They identify and contrasts basic shapes, including polygons, angles, and circles, as well as find perimeter and area of polygons and circumference of circles.

Chapter 19-Identify, describe, and classify 3-dimensional objects; identify describe, and classify 2-dimensional figures; identify, describe, and classify lines, line segments, rays triangles and quadrilaterals; identify, describe, classify, and draw angles; identify and describes circles, and use skills and strategies to solve problems.

Chapter 20-Identify congruent and similar 2-dimensional figures; identify translations, reflections, and rotations; identify and draw symmetrical objects; estimate and determine perimeter, circumference, area, and volume; use skills and strategies to solve problems.

The book’s practice and problem solving pages may be used to review and strengthen the skills taught in class. If you feel your child could use some extra practice, please do this work on loose leaf paper. This will count as extra credit to his or her math grade. The workbooks will be used for the homework assignments.

Fifth Grade has a newer math book. The book is available on disk to use at home. If you are interested the price is $55.

Unit 5 -The emphasis of this unit is mastery of basic understanding of fractions as numbers, including concepts of greater common factor, least common denominator, and simplest form.

Chapter 9-Students will learn: writing composite numbers as products of primes, finding the GCF, finding equivalent fractions, and simplifying fractions

Chapter 10-Students will learn: finding the LCM and LCD; relating fractions and decimals; comparing and ordering fractions, mixed numbers and decimals

Unit 6-the emphasis of this unit is mastery of addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers, including estimation. Properties of addition are applied to fractions.

Chapter 11-Students will learn: adding fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators, applying properties of addition to fractions and mixed numbers

Chapter 12-Students will learn: subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators, estimating sums and differences of fractions and mixed numbers
I am very proud of all the hard work and efforts of my students.
