Welcome to 304

Mrs. Holbrook                                 Grade 5

Happy Birthday

There are no February birthdays in our class.

PeaceBuilders

St. Pascal is a proud PeaceBuilders school, the first in the Midwest. We are implementing this exciting new program in our school. Every morning the students recite this pledge.

I pledge to my parents, my teachers, my
classmates, and the entire St. Pascal School Community,
that I will, with the help of Jesus' love
be a PeaceBuilder today.
I pledge
to praise people
to give up put-downs
to seek wise people
to notice and speak up about hurts I have caused
to right wrongs
to help others
I will build peace at home, at school, and
in my community each day.

Music Performance

On Monday, February 8, at 9:00 A.M., our class will be presenting the opera "Carmen." This classroom production will take place in the Music Room, 303, on the third floor. All are invited.

Book It Program

On October 1, we began our yearly Book It Program. Students
should keep track of how many minutes they read each day and record it on their Book It calendar. At the end of the month they should total their minutes and have it signed by a parent before returning it to school. If they reach their monthly goal, they will receive a certificate for a free individual pizza at Pizza Hunt and extra credit points in Reading. Please encourage your child to read every day.

Old CDs

Please save and send to school any old CDs you no longer want. I will use them for a project later in the year.

Lent

This year Lent begins on February 17 when we celebrate Ash Wednesday. After discussing possible ways to prepare ourselves for Easter, we will write three Lenten promises. By keeping these promises of prayer, sacrifice and good works, we will be able to share in the joy of Christ's resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Research Report

We have just begun our research report on a Social Studies topic. After writing questions for research, we are searching for answers in books, encyclopedias, and web sites. We took a trip to the library across the street to locate books, and we are using the Internet in computer class. Once we have completed our note-taking, we will write our reports.

Social Studies

Social Studies is the study of people and the world we live in. It is a complex, which consists of eight parts: History, Geography, Government, Economics, Culture, Citizenship, Science, Technology and Society, and Social Studies Skills.

This year we will study American History.

Social Studies   Unit 4 The Fight for Independence

Great Britain began to pass several unpopular tax laws in 1765, which sparked a rebellion among the colonists. After declaring themselves independent, the colonists sought to gain independence from British rule. After winning the eight-year Revolutionary War, the former colonies faced the challenge of establishing a new government.

Religion

This year we study the seven sacraments of the Church. Jesus, of course, is the greatest sacrament because He is a sign of God's loving presence in our lives.

Unit 4: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick

Jesus proclaims that he has come to forgive sins. Throughout his ministry he healed the sick in body and in soul. Through the sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick, we are healed by the saving action of Christ.
