All students in grades first through eighth grade have recently finished fitness testing.  The purpose of this testing is to help them evaluate their own level of fitness in regards to strength, flexibility, and endurance.  The results of these tests will be given out with the first report card.    Students were also measured for height and weight.   Recent studies have shown an increase in obesity  in children.  This is due to a number of factors, including being less active then their parents and grandparents.    A recent Chicago Tribune article stated “obese children run the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol problems and other ailments more commonly found in adults.  And overweight children are more likely to grow up to be overweight adults.”   We have also been discussing the importance of fitness in health class.

Pre- K and kindergarten students have been working on their basic movement skills and well as playing simple games.

All students are presently working on their throwing and catching skills, and playing games using a football.   Next they will be working on their soccer skills.   Red Ribbon Week is in October, so we will be discussing drug related topics in health.
